Beide waren zu Beginn des Krieges zunächst der österreichischen Armee beigetreten. Später schlossen sie sich der Tschechoslowakischen Legion in Russland an und kämpfte somit gegen die Mittelmächte, auf deren Seite der jüngere Bruder Vít eingesetzt war. Vojtěch und František kehrten erst 1920 wieder nach Hause zurück. In der Audiodatei spricht Jitka Saková, die Tochter von Vít Janeček über diese Rückkehr: --- Fotografie zobrazuje bratry Františka a Vojtěcha Janečkovy po jejich návratu z Ruska v roce 1920 zřejmě (s největší pravděpodobností) na nádraží v Českých Budějovicích. Oba narukovali nejprve do rakousko-uherské armády, později se však připojili k československým legiím v Rusku, které bojovaly proti Ústředním mocnostem. Tím pádem se ocitli na opačné straně konfliktu, než jejich mladší bratr Vít, který bojoval v řadách rakousko-uherské armády. Vojtěch s Františkem se vrátili domů teprve v roce 1920. Na zvukovém záznamu mluví Jitka Saková, dcera Víta Janečka o tomto návratu: „…. A to se oni vrátili … ten Vojtík … nevím ani, jestli byli spolu, to nevím prostě, ale vím, že jeli až nějak přes Ameriku a tak se vraceli sem do Evropy … postupně“ 91er Regiment
