Entgegen der Rezeptions- und Wirkungsgeschichte zum Ersten Weltkrieg, die sich lange Zeit vor allem auf die Westfront in Frankreich konzentrierte, war die Ostfront ein nicht minder zentraler Kriegsschauplatz für die Mittelmächte. Bis Kriegsende 1918 sollte die Ostfront mit über 1.000 Kilometern von Ostpreußen an der Ostsee bis hinunter zur Ukraine am Schwarzen Meer der längste zusammenhängende Frontverlauf im Ersten Weltkrieg werden. Dennoch gilt die Ostfront im Ersten Weltkrieg als "die vergessene Front". Aufgrund der ethnisch-kulturellen und nationalen Gemengelage und der damit verbundenen Frage der „Loyalität“ der jeweils lokal ansässigen Bevölkerungen wurde indessen der große Krieg an der Ostfront auf allen Seiten der kriegführenden Parteien zu einem politisch-ideologisch motivierten "Krieg der Galgen und der Gehängten" (Herfried Münkler).
