Zu Anfang des Krieges wurde er in das 91er Regiment in Budweis eingezogen. Bereits 1914 wurde er gefangen genommen und kam in ein Kriegsgefangenenlager in Sibirien. Dort arbeitete er in einem Bleibergwerk und zog sich bei eisiger Kälte Erfrierungen zu. Erst 1920 konnte er nach Winterberg zurückkehren; wobei er von Weißrussland bis in den Böhmerwald zu Fuß ging. Nach seiner Rückkehr trat er 1920 dem Veteranenverein Winterberg bei, von dem dieses Kreuz stammt. Markowetz war bis zur Vertreibung aus dem Böhmerwald Mitglied des Veteranenvereins. Sein Enkel Sepp Sager lebt heute in Schönberg im Landkreis Regen. In der Audiodatei erzählt Sepp Sager von dem Kreuz. --- Dědeček Seppa Sagera Josef Markowetz pocházel z Vimperku na Šumavě. Na začátku války narukoval k 91. pluku v Českých Budějovicích. Již v roce 1914 byl však zajat a umístěn do zajateckého tábora na Sibiři, kde pracoval v olověném dole. Při práci v mrazu si přivodil omrzliny. Teprve v roce 1920 se mohl vrátit do Vimperku, velkou část cesty, z Běloruska až na Šumavu absolvoval pěšky. Po svém návratu v roce 1920 vstoupil do spolku vimperských veteránů, od kterého pochází tento kříž. Markowetz byl členem spolku až do vysídlení ze Šumavy. Dnes žije jeho vnuk Sepp Sager v Schönbergu v okrese Regen. Na zvukovém záznamu vypráví Sepp Sager o tomto kříži. Markowetz stammte aus Winterberg im Böhmerwald und geriet bereits 1914 in Russland in Kriegsgefangenschaft, aus der er erst 1920 zurückkehren konnte. Für Sepp Sager ist die Tonbandaufnahme, auf der sein Großvater über die Kriegserlebnisse berichtet, von besonderer Bedeutung. Er fertigte diese Aufnahme kurz vor dem 92. Geburtstag von Josef Markowetz an. --- V tomto rozhovoru vypráví Sepp Sager o válečných zkušenostech a návratu svého dědečka Josefa Markowtze. Markowetz, který pocházel z Vimperku na Šumavě, se již v roce 1914 dostal do ruského zajetí, ze kterého se vrátil teprve v roce 1920. Nahrávka na magnetonové pásce, na které jeho dědeček vypráví o svých zážitcích z války, má pro Seppa Sagera neobyčejný význam. Tuto nahrávku pořídil těsně před 92. narozeninami Josefa Markowtze. Na památné kartičce se nachází rovněž zmínka o tom, že pomník byl postaven podle plánu akademického sochaře Václava Suchomela, zhotoven sochařem Karlem Stuchlíkem na náklady dobrodinců a římovského děkana Jaroslava Paulusa. Kartičku věnoval prostějovský farář Karel Dostál Lutinov a vyhotovena byla ve Steinbrenerově tiskárně ve Vimperku. --- Erinnerungskärtchen an die Einweihung des Denkmals für die gefallenen Soldaten in Římov (Rimau) bei Budweis vom 12. 10. 1919. Es enthält ein kurzes Gebet an die Jungfrau Maria der Schmerzen und eine Auflistung der gefallenen Soldaten aus Římov. Auf der Erinnerungskarte findet sich zudem der Hinweis, dass das Denkmal nach dem Plan des akademischen Bildhauers Václav Suchomel gebaut und fertiggestellt von dem Bildhauer Karel Stuchlík aus Mitteln des Wohltäters und Rimauer Dekans Jaroslav Paulus. Das Kärtchen stiftete der Pfarrer Karel Dostál Lutinov aus Prostějov und produziert wurde es in der Steinbrener-Druckerei in Winterberg.
