Im zarten Kleinkind- bzw. Grundschulalter war Franz Bauer beim Anblick aufgehängter Soldatenbilder im Wohnzimmer seiner Großmutter mütterlicherseits zum allerersten Mal in seinem Leben mit dem Ersten Weltkrieg in Berührung gekommen. Die Bilder zeigten seine Großonkeln, d.h. die Brüder der Großmutter Beisl, in stolzen Uniformen und mit Tornister. Unter jedem Porträt hatte die Großmutter Verbleib und/oder Schicksal der Brüder im Krieg vermerkt: "verwundet", "gefallen", "heimgekehrt 1918". So ist von Alois Beisl bekannt, dass er 1916 in der von Februar bis Dezember währenden Schlacht von Verdun gefallen ist. Als Reservist der Bundeswehr leistete der gelernte Drucker ab Mitte/Ende der 1970er und vor allem von den 1980er Jahren an aktiv seinen persönlichen Beitrag zur deutsch-französischen Freundschaft durch seine Partnerschaft mit ehem. Unteroffizieren der französischen Armee. Anlässlich des gemeinsamen Besuches der historischen Festungsstadt Verdun sowie der vor Verdun gelegenen, 1916 hart umkämpften Festung Douaumont und des hiervon unweit entfernt gelegenen klosterartigen Beinhauses mit „Riesensoldatenfriedhof“ (Bauer), das beim verwüsteten Dorf Fleury-devant-Douaumont auf Initiative des damaligen Bischofs von Verdun Charles Ginistry 1920 angefangen und 1932 als Erinnerungsstätte der französischen Nation an die Schlacht von Verdun und die "Grande Guerre" von 1914-1918 feierlich eingeweiht worden war, machte sich Bauer erfolgreich auf Spurensuche nach seinem Großonkel Alois Beisl. Die militärische Festung Douaumont war im Frankreich der Dritten Republik zwischen 1885 und 1913 als Teil der ab 1874 unternommenen militärischen Absicherung der französischen Grenze gegen Deutschland vor dem Hintergrund der Niederlage im Krieg von 1870/71 erbaut worden. Am Vorabend des Ersten Weltkrieges galt die Festung unweit vom damaligen Dorf Douaumont als stärkste Anlage im Festungsgürtel um die historische Festungsstadt Verdun im Département Meuse. Dennoch wurde die Festung bereits am 25. Februar 1916 ohne Kampfhandlungen von den deutschen Truppen blitzartig eingenommen. Umso erbitterter wurde der französische Kampf um die Rückeroberung des Fort Douaumont geführt im Zuge der 300 Tage und 300 Nächte währenden Verdun-Schlacht als der für die „erbfeindlichen“ Beziehungen an der Westfront wohl größten, zentralsten und symbolträchtigsten Schlacht des Ersten Weltkrieges. Umso versöhnlicher sind das Beinhaus und der Soldatenfriedhof bei Fleury-devant-Douaumont gestaltet: Das nationale Denkmal ist ausnahmslos allen namentlich identifizierten wie „unbekannten“ Soldatenopfer gewidmet. Die "Semantik der Heiligung" (Herfried Münkler) bzw. die "sakrale Semantik" (Münkler) sind charakteristisch für die religiöse Überhöhung eines im Grunde genommen profanen, weltlichen Todes im Namen von Kaiser, Volk, Nation oder Vaterland. Der offensichtliche Einsatz des "Bayerwäldlers" an der Italienfront, somit in den Alpen an der Südfront in den Reihen der österreichisch-ungarischen Armee, lässt darauf schließen, dass sich der Bekannte der Ratzesbergers freiwillig bei der Armee des Verbündeten gemeldet hatte. Dem Politikwissenschaftler und Historiker Herfried Münkler zufolge könne der Erste Weltkrieg im Grunde genommen als der "vierte deutsche Einigungskrieg" betrachtet werden. Tatsächlich muss hervorgehoben werden, dass mit Ausbruch des Krieges von 1914 - 1918 ausnahmslos alle als wehrfähig gemusterten bzw. erachteten Männer deutscher Zunge ab dem Mindestalter von 15/17 Jahren erstmals in der Geschichte Mitteleuropas zum Kampf gegen dieselben Feindstaaten mobilisiert wurden.
