Zu den Überbleibseln aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg und deren Besitzern hat er viele Informationen und kann einige Geschichten erzählen. In dem Interview erzählt er von seiner Tätigkeit. Unter anderem besitzt er eine große Sammlung von Sterbebildern. Das Sterbebild von Alois Feldmeier - „Oekonomensohn von Eppendorf“ - nennt auf der linken Seite das Todesdatum 21. Dezember 1916, die Todesursache „Lungenentzündung“ und den Todesort, „im Feld-Spital“. Darunter befinden sich gute Wünsche und ein Gedicht in Reinform. Oben auf der Seite ist das Eiserne Kreuz abgedruckt, in ihm die kaiserliche Krone, in der Mitte des Kreuzes das Initial W für Wilhelm und unten im Kreuz die Jahreszahl 1914 für den Kriegsausbruch. Auf der rechten Seite posiert der Verstorbene in voller Uniform und Soldatenmütze. In der rechten Hand hält er eine Lanze, in der linken Hand einen Strauss Blumen, sein Gewehr ist hinter seiner linken Schulter an seinen Rucksack angelehnt. Die schwarz-weiße Fotografie ist vermutlich eine Studioaufnahme mit einem Wald als Hintergrundbild. --- Herbert Zauhar je dobrovolný vlastivědný badatel a bývalý starosta Tittlingu, který již 10 let sbírá historické dokumenty a předměty ze své obce. O pozůstalostech z první světové války a jejich majitelích ví mnoho a zná také několik s nimi spojených příběhů (podobně jako mnozí další vlastivědní badatelé v Bavorsku). V rozhovoru se Herbert Zauhar zmiňuje o své činnosti dobrovolného vlastivědného badatele. Mimo jiné vlastní velkou sbírku nekrologů místních vojáků padlých za první světové války. Mit gerade einmal 18 Jahren und 9 Monaten fand Ludwig Hackl den Tod an der Westfront als militärischer Pionier in der ersten Kampfreihe durch einen Giftgasangriff. Das Sterbedatum (18. Juli 1918) und die Information: "Soldat bei einem bayer. Pionier-Rgt.", lassen darauf schließen, dass Ludwig Hackl höchstwahrscheinlich während der Operation Marneschutz-Reims vom 15. bis 18. Juli als die fünfte und letzte Angriffsoperation im Zuge der sogenannten deutschen Frühjahrsoffensive von 1918 an vorderster Front im Einsatz war. Als einfacher Soldat stand Ludwig Hackl unter dem Oberbefehl des Generalfeldmarschalls Paul von Hindenburg (1847 – 1934) und seines Stabschefs und Stellvertreters, dem General der Infanterie und Ersten Generalquartiermeister Erich Ludendorff (1865 – 1937). Im Gesamtkontext des großen europäischen Krieges haben beide genannten Generäle als "faktische Kriegsverbrecher" (Vicente Such-Garcia) die menschliche Katastrophe der "Verlorenen Generation" in Europas totalem Krieg von deutscher Seite her in allerletzter Instanz zu verantworten. In der förmlichen Militärdiktatur der Obersten Heeresleitung (OHL) unter Hindenburgs und Ludendorffs Führung von August 1916 bis November 1918 wurde das Mindestalter für die Rekruten auf 16 Jahren herabgesenkt und die Wehrpflicht auf ausnahmslos alle Männer zwischen dem vollendeten 16. und 60. Lebensjahr ausgedehnt. Ludwig Hackl aus dem Dorf Finsterau im Bayerischen Wald ist damit eines der Sinnbilder dieser im Ersten Weltkrieg sinnlos geopferten, "verlorenen Generation", welcher u.a. der Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge in Kooperation mit dem Bundesarchiv ein ganzes multimediales und interaktives pädagogisches Projekt widmet. Der Zusatz "Oekonomsohn" scheint die These des Historikers, Vize-Direktors und Hauptkonservators des Bayerischen Armeemuseums in Ingolstadt Dieter Storz zu bestätigen, wonach die im gesamten damaligen Deutschen Reich zuweilen übersteigerte Kriegsbegeisterung, jenes "Augusterlebnis" von 1914, in erster Linie ein groß-, klein-, massen- und bildungsbürgerliches, somit auch intellektuelles, akademisches und studentisches Phänomen war. Die jungen und unerfahrenen Rekruten, die in den letzten beiden Kriegsjahren 1917 und 1918 sich entweder noch kriegsfreiwillig meldeten, oder aber vor allem noch regulär eingezogen wurden, mussten ihre Grundausbildung als Soldaten in den Kasernen und an den Waffen im Schnelldurchlauf absolvieren. Wie in allen anderen kriegführenden Staaten hatte die deutsche Jugend von August 1914 an in der Heimatfront ihren Kenntnisstand über den großen europäischen Krieg in erster Linie aus der Propaganda in Presse und Postkarten, Fotografien und Plakatbildern und sogar bereits aus den allerersten Lichtspielfilmen erworben. Mit Richard Bessels Worten konnte daher „das Bild des heldenhaften Soldaten (…) hier leichter intakt bleiben als bei den älteren Männern, die gerade erst vom sinnlosen Blutvergießen in den Schützengräben“ dank „Heimatschuss“/„Fronturlaub“ oder im Zuge der "Drückebergerei", schließlich im Verlauf der Demobilisierung bei Kriegsende im November 1918 jeweils zurückkehrten. Aus der Aussage Helmut Haselbergers im Interviewmitschnitt lassen sich die beruflichen Aussichten und Perspektiven erahnen, die Helmut Haselbergers Großonkel mütterlicherseits als zurückgekehrter Kriegsveteran, besser noch ohne den Weltkrieg, gehabt hätte: In Finsterau hätte Ludwig Hackl ein angesehener Land-, Haus- und Gastwirt und ehrenhafter Bürger seines Ortes werden können. Ludwig Dellawalle war in Heinrichsbrunn ein Bekannter der Großfamilie Ratzesberger gewesen. Die "Semantik der Heiligung" (Herfried Münkler) bzw. die "sakrale Semantik" (Münkler) sind charakteristisch für die religiöse Überhöhung eines im Grunde genommen profanen, weltlichen Todes im Namen von Kaiser, Volk, Nation oder Vaterland. Der offensichtliche Einsatz des "Bayerwäldlers" an der Italienfront, somit in den Alpen an der Südfront in den Reihen der österreichisch-ungarischen Armee, lässt darauf schließen, dass sich der Bekannte der Ratzesbergers freiwillig bei der Armee des Verbündeten gemeldet hatte. Dem Politikwissenschaftler und Historiker Herfried Münkler zufolge könne der Erste Weltkrieg im Grunde genommen als der "vierte deutsche Einigungskrieg" betrachtet werden. Tatsächlich muss hervorgehoben werden, dass mit Ausbruch des Krieges von 1914 - 1918 ausnahmslos alle als wehrfähig gemusterten bzw. erachteten Männer deutscher Zunge ab dem Mindestalter von 15/17 Jahren erstmals in der Geschichte Mitteleuropas zum Kampf gegen dieselben Feindstaaten mobilisiert wurden. In diesem Zusammenhang waren Kriegsfreiwillige aus dem respektive deutschsprachigen Nachbarland, deren Ersuchen um Erlaubnis zur Eingliederung in ein Regiment der respektive "Bruderarmee" von Ämtern und Behörden oder gar per Erlass von den jeweiligen Fürsten und Monarchen höchstpersönlich genehmigt wurde, zum Zeitpunkt des Ersten Weltkriegs keine Seltenheit: Der historisch wohl bis heute bekannteste Fall eines österreichischen Kriegsfreiwilligen in einer Armee des Deutschen Kaiserreiches ist der "Kriegsgefreite" Adolf Hitler, der in der zu Passau stationierten ersten Kompanie des kgl.-bayerischen Reserve-Infanterie-Regiments 16 an der Westfront diente.
