Maßstab 1:150000 Über vier Jahre lang, von Anfang August 1914 bis Anfang/Mitte November 1918, zog sich die Westfront quer durch das Land des damals sogenannten „Erbfeindes“: Vom Ärmelkanal in Nordfrankreich und an der südwestlichsten Spitze Belgiens bis an die Schweizer Alpen besaß sie eine Gesamtlänge von 750 Kilometern. Die Teilkarte befand sich im Besitz von Gregor Reif, dem Großvater mütterlicherseits von Karl Hackl. Gregor Reif diente als Soldat an der Westfront. Die Teilkarte ist mit der fortlaufenden Nummer 34 versehen: Sie zeigt den Frontverlauf in der Somme-Ebene in der nordfranzösischen Region der Picardie. Gregor Reif war an der Somme-Schlacht als eine der Schlüsselschlachten des Ersten Weltkrieges an vorderster Front mit beteiligt. Von Juni/Juli bis Mitte November 1916 tobte dort 141 Tage lang eine der größten Schlachten des Ersten Weltkrieges zwischen den französischen und britischen Armeen einerseits und den deutschen Truppen andererseits ohne nennenswerte Gebietsgewinne für die eine oder andere Seite. Nach Monaten des Gefechtes unter Dauerbeschuss mit Granaten und Bomben durch die Artillerien wurde die Schlacht Mitte November 1916 ohne klares militärisches Ergebnis abgebrochen. Die Zahl der Opfer, Verletzten und Verwundeten belief sich insgesamt auf über eine Millionen Soldaten. Damit hatten die kriegführenden imperialen Mächte Frankreich, England und Deutschland zusammen mit Abstand die größten menschlichen Verluste seit dem Kriegsbeginn vom August 1914 zu verzeichnen. Die Somme-Schlacht gilt als das „britische Verdun“, und, aus Sicht eines deutschen Offiziers im Somme-Feldzug, als „das Schlammgrab der deutschen Feldarmee“. Der Historiker Ben Dupré fasst zusammen: „Am Ende der Somme-Offensive waren die alleierten Streitkräfte im Durchschnitt ungefähr zehn Kilometer an der Front vorgerückt und nahmen eine Stellung ein, die sich strategisch kaum von jener unterschied, die sie 20 Wochen zuvor innegehabt hatten“. Als Kanonier im 7. Bayerischen Artillerie-Regiment war der junge Soldat im November 1916 während der Endphase der Somme-Schlacht mit Ben Duprés Worten am „Blutbad beteiligt, das die Kriegsromantik Lügen strafte“.
