Přijměte ode mne srdčný pozdrav a stálou vzpomínku. Dnes právě jsem obdržel od Vás dva dopisy, píšete mi, že ode mne nic nedotáváte a já přece píši dost často. Dne 1. března jsme opustili naše místo, kam teď půjdem sám nevím. Šulista je v nemocnici, není s ním však zle, má jen omrzlé nohy. Piště zas brzy a hodně toho.

Gerade heute habe ich von Euch zwei Briefe erhalten, ihr schreibt mir, dass ihr von mir nichts erhalten habt, aber ich schreibe Euch so häufig. Am 1. März haben wir unseren Ort verlassen, wohin wir jetzt gehen, weiß ich selbst nicht. Šulista ist im Krankenhaus, es geht ihm aber nicht schlecht, er hat nur erfrorene Füße. Sepp Sagers Großvater Josef Markowetz stammt aus Winterberg im Böhmerwald. Zu Anfang des Krieges wurde er in das 91er Regiment in Budweis eingezogen. Bereits 1914 wurde er gefangen genommen und kam in ein Kriegsgefangenenlager in Sibirien. Dort arbeitete er in einem Bleibergwerk und zog sich bei eisiger Kälte Erfrierungen zu. Erst 1920 konnte er nach Winterberg zurückkehren; wobei er von Weißrussland bis in den Böhmerwald zu Fuß ging.
Nach seiner Rückkehr trat er 1920 dem Veteranenverein Winterberg bei, von dem dieses Kreuz stammt. Markowetz war bis zur Vertreibung aus dem Böhmerwald Mitglied des Veteranenvereins. Sein Enkel Sepp Sager lebt heute in Schönberg im Landkreis Regen.

Dědeček Seppa Sagera Josef Markowetz pocházel z Vimperku na Šumavě. Na začátku války narukoval k 91. pluku v Českých Budějovicích. Již v roce 1914 byl však zajat a umístěn do zajateckého tábora na Sibiři, kde pracoval v olověném dole. Při práci v mrazu si přivodil omrzliny. Teprve v roce 1920 se mohl vrátit do Vimperku, velkou část cesty, z Běloruska až na Šumavu absolvoval pěšky.
Po svém návratu v roce 1920 vstoupil do spolku vimperských veteránů, od kterého pochází tento kříž. Markowetz byl členem spolku až do vysídlení ze Šumavy. Dnes žije jeho vnuk Sepp Sager v Schönbergu v okrese Regen.
Na zvukovém záznamu vypráví Sepp Sager o tomto kříži.

Wie in allen anderen kriegführenden Staaten Europas, hatte der Erste Weltkrieg eine Beschleunigung der sozialen und politischen Reformen in Deutschland bedeutet. Insbesondere die Kriegsheimkehrer erlebten mit Steffen Bruendels Worten, dass die „Volksgemeinschaft“ „mehr als nur eine nationale Solidaritätsformel“ war. Der obrigkeitsstaatlich organisierte Interventionsstaat alter Bismarckscher Prägung war vor allem ab 1916 endgültig zu einem „Interventionsstaat mit korporativen Konsultationsmechanismen“ (Steffen Bruendel) weiterentwickelt worden. Von Anbeginn der Novemberrevolution von 1918 und der Weimarer Republik wurde als Revolutionsprophylaxe durch „Revolution von Oben“ in Form einer „Demokratisierung von Oben“ ein ganzes Maßnahmenkatalog beschlossen und umgesetzt, um den Übergang von der Rüstungs- zurück zur Zivilwirtschaft zu gewährleisten, den drängenden sozialen Fragen und Problemen durch den systematischen Auf- und Ausbau der allgemeinen wie korporativ-konsultativen Sozial-, Interventions- und Wohlfahrtsstaatlichkeit zu begegnen und die Kriegsheimkehrer in die regionale und lokale Zivilgesellschaft durch Arbeit und Beschäftigung wieder einzugliedern. Demobilmachung hieß in diesem Zusammenhang das Gebot der Stunde: „Das Ziel sämtlicher Demobilmachungsverordnungen war die Stabilisierung der wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und politischen Lage bei gleichzeitiger Reintegration der rund 900.000 rückkehrenden Soldaten in den Arbeitsmarkt. Die Regelungen umfassten hauptsächlich staatliche Eingriffe in die Beschäftigungspolitik, den Ausbau des Arbeitsnachweiswesens sowie die Organisation der Erwerbslosenfürsorge. So genannte Notstandsarbeiten sollten der Arbeitsbeschaffung dienen, beispielsweise im staatlichen Straßen- oder Brückenbau, in der Forstwirtschaft oder innerhalb der Wasser- und Elektrizitätsversorgungsanlagen“.

Insbesondere verlangten die „Demobilmachungserlasse“ der Reichsregierung und des Freistaats Bayern von den Arbeitgebern, dass sie den in die Heimat wieder zurückgekehrten, ehemaligen Soldaten (ihre alten) Arbeitsplätze (wieder) anbieten. Dem Historiker Richard Bessel zufolge hatten die meisten heimkehrenden Kriegsveteranen offensichtlich schnell wieder Arbeit finden können. Das Gruppenbild aus dem Privatarchiv von Roland Ratzesberger bestätigt offensichtlich die Forschungslage: „Die Wiedereingliederung der Soldaten und heimgekehrten Kriegsgefangenen in die Arbeitswelt im Rahmen der Demobilmachung wurde in Bayern auch von staatlichen Stellen in großem Umfang unterstützt und gelang z. Die Merkblätter des Internationalen Nansenamtes informieren über verschiedene Regelungen zur Einbürgerung staatenloser russischer Flüchtlinge / Kriegsgefangener. Sie waren somit auch für Wassilij Fedjajeff von Bedeutung, dessen Nachkommen die Dokumente aufbewahrten. Das Internationale Nansenamt kümmerte sich in den Jahren 1930 bis 1939 um Flüchtlinge aus Kriegsgebieten.

Poučení Nansenova mezinárodního úřadu pro uprchlíky informují o nejrůznějších ustanoveních pro udělení státního občanství ruským uprchlíkům nebo válečným zajatcům bez státní příslušnosti. Byly tedy důležité i pro Vasilije Fedjajeffa, jehož potomci tyto dokumenty uchovali. Nansenův mezinárodní úřad pro uprchlíky se v letech 1930 – 1939 staral o uprchlíky z válečných oblastí.
