Roland Ratzesberger zufolge war Heinrich Ratzesberger der Sohn von Franz Ratzesberger dem Jüngeren und Großonkel Roland Ratzesbergers. Roland Ratzesbergers Großvater Franz Ratzesberger der Jüngere (1895 - 1956), Sohn von Roland Ratzesbergers Urgroßvater Franz Ratzesberger dem Älteren, musste demnach ab ca. 1916, mit 21 Jahren, am Ersten Weltkrieg als Soldat teilgenommen haben: Er war Soldat an der Westfront. Roland Ratzesberger zufolge kehrte Franz Ratzesberger der Jüngere allerspätestens im Laufe des Jahres 1919 zurück. Zwischen dem definitiven Kriegsende, das an der Westfront mit dem Waffenstillstand vom 11. November 1918 eingeleitet wurde, und Anfang/Mitte 1919 vergingen für die Großfamilie Ratzesberger in Heinrichsbrunn, Gemeinde Mauth, allerdings Tage, Wochen und Monate des Wartens in der Ungewissheit. Die Unwissenheit und Unsicherheit über Schicksal und Verbleib des Sohnes und, nach Roland Ratzesbergers Aussagen, bereits jungen Familienvaters im Krieg beherrschten das Denken der Großfamilie: Schließlich wusste die gesamte Familie in Heinrichsbrunn von einem Gruppenbild auf Postkarte, dass während des Krieges der "liebe Papa" Franz Ratzesberger der Jüngere dem Schicksal, womöglich dem Tod knapp enteilt, schon einmal im "Fronturlaub" in einem Lazarett zu Erlangen gewesen war. Franz Ratzesberger der Ältere hat sich mit größter Wahrscheinlichkeit freiwillig in der österreichisch-ungarischen „Bruderarmee“ für den Krieg gemeldet. Hierfür sprechen die Felduniformen: Sie sind weniger charakteristisch für eine süd- oder norddeutsche (d.h. kgl.-bayer./-bad./-württ./-preuß.) denn für die k.-u.-k. Armee. Auf der Rückseite der Fotopostkarte ist in alter deutscher Kurrent-Schrift zudem vermerkt: "Ludwig und Franz in Itzling". Itzling ist nicht allein ein Dorf in Oberbayern, sondern zudem ein Stadtteil von Salzburg in Österreich. Die Fotografie muss daher vor der Ausfahrt eines österreichischen Militärlagers im Salzburger Stadtteil Itzling aufgenommen worden sein. Der Erste Weltkrieg bedeutete buchstäblich Weltkrieg und notgedrungene Weltreise zugleich für Roland Ratzesbergers Urgroßvater und einen weiteren Kameraden namens Raymund Bayer, der entweder ebenfalls aus dem niederbayerischen Heinrichsbrunn, Gemeinde Mauth im Bayerischen Wald stammte, oder den das Kriegsschicksal an der Ostfront mit Franz Ratzesberger dem Älteren in der gemeinsamen Not und Bedrängnis zusammenführte. In beiden Fällen teilten Franz Ratzesberger und Raymund Bayer im Ersten Weltkrieg dasselbe Los: Sie mussten sich zusammen von der Ostfront über die gemeinsam durchlebte russische Kriegsgefangenschaft bis zu ihrer Rückkehr in die niederostbayerische Heimat durchschlagen. Die insgesamt siebenjährige Odyssee von 1914 bis 1921 um den halben Globus von Franz Ratzesberger d. Ä., Roland Ratzesbergers Urgroßvater, zusammen mit Raymund Bayer von der Ostfront aus durch die russische Kriegsgefangenschaft über Sibirien, Eurasien und den asiatischen Fernen Osten (Japan, China, Indien) wieder zurück nach Westeuropa und in die niederbayerische Heimat wurde aufgrund ihrer absolut außergewöhnlichen Einmaligkeit sogar in der lokalen Dorfchronik festgehalten.
