Mit Friedrich Nietzsches Worten schrieb Franz Ratzesberger der Ältere aus dem beschaulichen ländlich-bäuerlichen Heinrichsbrunn im Bayerischen Wald mit Blut: Frei nach Richard Wagners dichtenden und komponierenden Schuhmachermeister Hans Sachs aus den \"Meistersingern von Nürnberg\" lässt sich zu seinem Sibirien-Lied sagen, dass Sibirien für Franz Ratzesberger d. Ä. in den inspirierenden Liedzeilen gesungen hat. In Lagern untergebrachte oder etwa beim Eisenbahnbau eingesetzte Gefangene hatten erschwerte Bedingungen, während es jenen in der Landwirtschaft besser erging. Bis 1917 war die Versorgung insgesamt zufrieden stellend. Im Revolutionsjahr 1917 verschlechterte sich die Lage erheblich. Ab Juni 1918 kehrten deutsche Gefangene aus dem europäischen Russland heim, während aufgrund der dortigen Bürgerkriegswirren jenen in Sibirien und Zentralasien die Rückkehr versperrt war.
